This handy map from Pleated Jeans turns USA stats into a cartographic parade of obesity, corruption and gonorrhea. It’s ugly, and not just in North Dakota. Alaska’s damn dreadful though, huh? (Sorry Yanks, no refunds!) Best case scenario, you weasel in between porny Utah and cokey Colorado and stay put. And then there’s New York’s terrible problem of… daily commute average of 30.6 minutes? Really? That’s our biggest problem?

Free time is a precious, but elusive commodity. We all want more free time to spend with family and friends doing things we love. We all want more money. Making money in my spare time is impossible you say? Read on.

I won't tell you to buy, build nor rent anything. I don't have answers to your cash crunch or financial troubles with one article or advice found herein. What I'll say is we all have spare time - if we organize our schedules. Admit it - we all waste free time just as much as use it. When spare time is just staring you in the face, exploit it with money making online.

Getting Started

The most limiting thing to making money online - or anywhere - is getting started. Most people simply can't get motivated or won't get past the belief that online work is just for "weirdos" or online work or money opportunities are "scams" for suckers. While there are loads of scams out there in cyberspace, there are as many or more legitimate work opportunities.

If you've been online for years, you still may dismiss money making or work online as not right for you or hard to jump start. You must defeat this mental block. You've got to be in it to win it, so get in it any way you can. A great thing to get started is asking others who are doing it for advice. Don't be afraid to ask a friend about how they got started, or better yet ask them to refer you to their online job or money making opportunity.

Write Online For Money

If you're reading this, you know about Associated Content. You may have a basic idea of the pay per article and bonus page view system, which works out nicely for Associated Content and its content producers. Maybe you're one of them now, or want to be. Either way, here are tips I've found helpful.

Article ideas and content may not come easily, if so don't force it. Now, that's not to say you can't discipline yourself with a daily regimen of brainstorms or research. The thing that's worked most for me is writing about things I know, things I love and things that touch me in some way. If you follow that path you can't go wrong. Ideas will flow.

Blogs & Google Ad Sense

Blogs aren't just for empty chatter. Write a blog every day and you'll bring numerous visitors to your website. Bringing those visitors to your site means money. By creating a great blog and earning a good reputation, Google Ad Sense will earn you cash. Google sets up any blog writer in mere minutes and the payment plan couldn't be easier.

Affiliate Making Money

Shazam Currently Boasts 30 Million Total iOS and Android Users

According to Mobile Entertainment, music discovery service Shazam now has 25 million iPhone and iPod Touch users and a total of 5 million users using its Android application, continuing to add more than one million users a week.

With so many users interacting with its service, Shazam’s app now tags 3 million tracks a day, facilitating between 250,000 and 300,000 track purchases, a conversion rate that fluctuates between 8-10%.

In December we noted that Shazam has surpassed the 100 million users mark, it has now become clear that this accounts for all of the people that have used the service in the ten years since the platform launched.

Mobile Entertainment estimates that Shazam earns between $10,000 and $15,000 a day from music referrals (using a track price of $0.99), equating to $300k – $450k a month, almost $6 million a year. Shazam offers a free smartphone application but also charges $5.99 for its premium iPhone and iPad app, so its revenues will be substantially higher from the figures quoted just for its affiliate sales.

The company also has sponsorship and advertising agreements in place, this week we brought you news of its partnership with Spotify to allow the playback of tracks using the service.

Whatever way you look at it, Shazam is dominating. The service provides perhaps the simplest of services and its users love it, it’s a money making machine.

Facebook's 3rd Biggest Advertiser Accused Of Being Affiliate Toolbar Scam; Facebook Says It's Never Heard Of The Company

from the just-like-the-old-days... dept

There have been numerous reports lately concerning just how much money Facebook is making on ads. That's part of the reason it was able to get that otherworldly $50 billion valuation from some. However, some are noticing something fishy in the Facebook ad business. After seeing an AdAge article mention in passing that the third largest advertiser on Facebook is not a household namebrand, but rather Make-My-Baby.com. Google's spam-catcher-in-chief Matt Cutts did some digging and quickly noticed that the site appears to be a sketchy toolbar installer that tries to switch you to using Bing, and then it gets an affiliate cut of any search ads you click on going forward. Cutts also points out that the URL to tell you how to uninstall the toolbar leads to a 404 page not found -- and many folks have had difficulty uninstalling the toolbar.

Marshall Kirkpatrick, over at ReadWriteWeb, digs in deeper and wonders if anyone at Facebook or Microsoft is actually minding the store. Even if they didn't directly know this was happening, if this is really the third largest advertiser on Facebook, both of those companies had to know something was up, just based on the numbers. A company like Facebook is intimately aware of its third biggest advertiser, and if the company is really driving that much traffic to Bing, then Microsoft would surely know about it as well.

Of course, this is where the story gets more bizarre. While Microsoft's response to this story was to cut off the company, Facebook's response was to claim that the company isn't an advertiser at all, let alone the third largest advertiser on the site. So how is it that reports suggest the company is the third largest advertiser, when Facebook claims they're not an advertiser at all? The company does have a slight hedge, by saying that "any affiliates that try to push people there we would shut down." So it's possible that it was hidden through some sort of affiliate setup before Facebook caught it -- but no one seems to be revealing any of the details.

Either way, all of this sounds quite reminiscent of the old adware days, where all sorts of sketchy companies would trick people into installing software to scrape up affiliate revenue. We hadn't seen much of that lately, as many of the old players eventually got wiped out, but it's hardly a surprise that similar schemes would quickly jump up in a Facebook world, whether or not it was officially through Facebook's advertising functionality.

I had an interesting conversation with my boss today about people that make a living online. He's semi-old school, so he doesn't really understand (or believe) that so many people these days provide for their families from website revenue and such. As I rattled on and tried to explain to him how every day people are accomplishing this, he obviously didn't understand like I wanted him to, and after 15 minutes of Internet Marketing babble, he shocked me when he asked me if I could name 10 ways people make money online.

Sure, no problem, boss! So here is what I came up with:

1. First choice, obviously, was blogging. Of course, I had to explain the ways you can make money with a blog (paid reviews, selling ads, text link sales, etc...) I think I drove the point home, and it made more sense when I explained the concept to him. The key to making money with your blog is to stick with it no matter what. Add content, grow it, and start raking in the cash.

2. I had to mention Ebay. Ebay was the starting point some 7 years ago when I started to technically "make money online". I even tried to sell paper plates once...it was an addiction. Seriously though, the average American household has so much crap stored away, you'd be surprised at what you can dig out and sell for a few bucks. It all adds up!

3. Drop-shipping. This one wasn't hard to explain, and it relates to #2. Basically, a company that offers a drop-shipping program will allow you to sell their products at whatever price you want to sell them at (over their price) and put the profit in your pocket - and they'll also ship the product from their warehouse to the customers home, so you never physically touch any product. This was really popular a few years back, but due to extreme saturation of the market, it's died down some.

4. Sell your skills. Nothing is more in demand online, than talent. Can you write, design, code, or translate? There are literally thousands of people out there that need your help, and usually don't know where to go and find it. Here's the cool part - they'll pay you handsomely for you services! To start finding gigs in your specialty area, head over to the Digital Point forums - plenty of waiting customers! (Logos sell really, really well!)

5. Can you make stuff that sells? If you specialize in making robots out of toothpicks and forks, then why the hell aren't you selling them online through your own website? This tip is kind of obvious (after-all, it IS 2007), but if you have a unique product or service, then pay the $500 (more or less)to get a custom website, and start taking orders! Again, this is a real no-brainer, but sometimes people need reminding.

6. PPC campaigns. This one is one of my personal favorites that I've been testing lately. PPC (pay per click) are ads that you buy on search engines (Google Adwords) to promote a product or service - usually through an affiliate. Each time someone clicks on your ad and makes a purchase, you get a commission. This method can be tricky and potentially costly at first, but the key to success is test, test, and more tests. Get creative with your keywords and ads - make them stand out. Tweak your landing pages until your conversions pick up. Usually, you'll find success after a lot of trial and error. Just watch your spending at first, because it's very easy to lose money if you slack in the research department!

7. Own a popular website or blog? Sell advertising! Although this may seem obvious, there are still a surprising amount of sites that don't actively sell their available ad spots. Make sure you have a link or page that clearly describes your rates and available types of ads. I hate nothing more than when I click on someones advertising page, and all it has is a contact form. I'll pass on it nearly every time.

8.Write and sell an e-book! With digital products being one of the hottest selling items on the internet right now, what better time to create you own and start raking in the cash! Do you know how to make a grilled cheese sandwich using nothing but cheese, cardboard, and lighter? Write a book about it! Trust me, no matter what, someone will buy it. 9. Do you take pictures? If so, another hot selling item is your original photography. With a quick Google search, you'll find 20 sites that offer to buy your stock digital photos. Some even pay royalties when users download them. For those of you that have huge photo collections of interesting stuff, you're sitting on a goldmine.

10. Exploit the virtual gold trade in video games (a personal favorite!). There are millions of people who play online games such as World of Warcraft who do nothing but stash the in game currency and sell it in bulk to brokers who resell it to regular players. This is a HUGE market, and although the market is packed, it seems like there is always room for one more 'player'. Check out ige.com to see what I mean. That's it for now, there are many more ways to make money online, but these are some of the easier and more obvious ones. I didn't go into great detail for each method because it would take me 4 days to get it all down. I know that if you're reading this blog, you're search engine savvy enough to find out more information if you need it. Now get out there and start earning some extra money!

Kinney has made more placements of U.S. associates and partners in Asia than any other firm in the past four years. You can reach them by email: asia at kinneyrecruiting dot com.]

Evan here. As we have been predicted would happen in past posts, a sizzling biglaw US associate lateral hiring boom has arrived in Hong Kong / China for the first quarter ’11. We expect this hiring boom to continue until spring, with hiring being steady afterwards but dropping to more normal levels.

A “perfect storm” has developed, causing many US and UK firms in Hong Kong / China to have multiple US corporate / cap markets urgent openings at one time now.

A lot of these top firms in Hong Kong / China have been understaffed since late 2009. When the global recession went into full swing in late 2008, the downturn had started to seriously affect biglaw deal flow in China (about a year after negative effects were felt in US and other Western markets), with IPOs coming to a stop. There was misguided concern at the time that because China had some dependence on US exports for its economy to be fully fueled, China would be heading into a bubble-busting down turn, even much worse than what was taking place in the US. However, in mid-’09, deal flow in China was booming again, fueled in large part by China’s own consumer economy expanding rapidly. This was no surprise to many of us who have observed China for several years. After all, 2009 was the year that China over took the US in new cars purchased annually, China overtook India in gold purchased annually, and the Asia Pacific Region overtook North America in daily commercial flights. id="more-55522">

But much of the world was skeptical the boom could continue more than a short time (dramatic bubble-busting predictions sold newspapers and perhaps made some Westerners feel better about themselves) and thus senior firm management at many firms were reluctant to invest heavily with new hires in China, especially considering the recession in West. With the worst recession of our lifetime in full swing, most US firms were on a global hiring freeze and trying to avoid more layoffs, rather than trying to hire laterals for China. The feeling was also that if there was a need to staff up on some deals in China, it could be done by sending over associates not busy in US, at least temporarily, which was a band-aid on what was becoming an understaffing problem. Further, it was just bad internal politics back them for a partner at a US firm in Asia or elsewhere to try to pressure their management for lateral hires because of the big push in ’09 to keep down costs and try to salvage profit numbers (to help recruit and retain partners) in the midst of a major recession.

By late ’09, some firms which had been in global hiring freeze started to make exceptions in China and allowed a hire here or there. In the first half of ’10, this trend continued. By the second half of ’10, it was a bit easier for top firms to get the green light from their global management to make more hires in China, but all during ’10, many of their associates in Hong Kong and the mainland were being heavily recruited by banks, firms and other entities, due to being in full scale boom that showed no signs of slowing down (for the most part).

Also, from late ’09 through today there have been some key Hong Kong local cap markets / corporate group acquisitions by top US firms. This has been a relatively new trend and global firm managements put a lot of focus on bringing in these groups. In order to have a local Hong Kong practice, foreign firms in Hong Kong must have an office with 50% or more of their total attorneys Hong Kong qualified. This numbers ratio issue, as well as the expensive investment firms were making on Hong Kong local practices, kept a number of firms from having the full green light to hire US associates in Hong Kong / China.

During the past 18 months there have been a number of events or predicted events that many economists predicted would fantastically derail China’s boom economy (selling more newspapers of course in the process), but China has blown through each hurdle and all the while giving global firm managements more confidence to fully invest in hiring in China. In mid ’10, the crisis in Greece and the EU caused the world markets to fall, including in Asia, and the thought amongst people we met with in Hong Kong / China at the time was that IPOs might finally slow down for a while, that China would push through the ABC deal and then things may be flat for a while. There was concern for a few weeks, but soon after deal flow continued to boom as never before.

In fact ’10 was the biggest year ever for IPOs in Hong Kong / China. No one expects this level of deal flow to continue at quite this pace even if the general boom continues for years. Also, IPO work is becoming more commoditized, with pressure on rates, it is not likely that top firms will get top rates for this work at boom deal flow levels indefinitely (there will still be a ton of this work, but firms will have to also diversify more into other corporate areas), even if the boom continues. However, because things have been so hot and now for more than 18 months and show no signs of slowing down throughout ’11 and into ‘12, global firm management at firms have caved in to their China partners requests for full green light to make US associate and other attorney hires. Another factor in this full green light happening at most firms is because it is natural to make such decisions at or near the end of a calendar or fiscal year and also firms realize many of their peers are doing same.

So we now have a situation where US partners in Hong Kong / China have been understaffed for 18 months, at some times badly understaffed, while they have been pitching global firm management for many months to allow more hires, and all of the sudden there is a full green light.

We know of some top firms, for example, in which US partners in Hong Kong / China had to, as recently as November ’10, jump through hoops for weeks to get clearance to give an offer letter to a US associate they verbally offered. Some of these same firms in December ‘10 and January ’11 are suddenly being given the green light by management to hire as many as 10 US associates in Hong Kong / China.

US partners in Hong Kong / China are finding out quickly though that while they had for two years the luxury of always being able to interview and hire the perfect candidate on paper, the native Chinese cap markets mid-level from a top 5 NYC firm for example, because they constantly had a roster of 5+ of such candidates, nowadays suddenly they are having to scramble to recruit these candidates, who are quickly coming off the market and not only receiving offers left and right, but also turning them down (can only join one firm after all).

Thus, there is some constructive panic going on in US biglaw hiring circles in Hong Kong / China and top firms are going to have to drop their selectivity somewhat. The top tier firms will make concessions on practice fit before they make concessions on academics. The 2ndtier firms typically are quicker to make concessions on academics before practice fit. Most firms are still going after fluent Mandarin speakers (or in many cases Korean speakers) but the pressure on the market is causing more “English only is ok” to pop up.

Also, keep in mind that if you happen to be native Chinese and at a top NYC firm and give notice this quarter due to a lateral move to Hong Kong / China, your firm may pull out all the stops to convince you to rescind your offer acceptance (even if you accepted the offer months ago and your new firm gave you flexibility with start date and is counting on you to join them). Such efforts will include a big show with senior partners, including in many cases the firm chairman or global practice head, stopping by your office to convince you to not worry about your new position and just transfer with them. Suddenly transfer requests that were turned down or put off indefinitely become instantly approved, with talk of you being the star of your class, with realistic shot at partner down the road, and that the firm will try to give you your specific practice preference in Hong Kong / China, even if you don’t want to help staff the IPO deals booming through. It may sound comical, but it is happening at some firms. Try to keep things in perspective.

Why will this sizzling hiring boom, which we feel for this quarter will be stronger than ’07, only last some months? Well, once the understaffed US practices in Hong Kong / China quickly reach critical mass, take care of their understaffing problem of the past 18 months as quickly as possible, hiring will naturally level off. As deal flow continues at boom levels, there will of course be plenty of US associate openings in Hong Kong / China, but not multiple openings at the majority of firms, and not 5 to 10 openings at once at some top firms.

If you are reading this, you are probably familiar on some level with article marketing. You may have even begun to do some article marketing research. But for those who may not know, let's take a quick look at this simple, effective way to earn an income online, then I will give you a simple, A - B - C, step-by-step plan to making money within 7 to 10 days.

There are several ways to make money by writing articles online, but the most common are ...

1 - Affiliate Marketing
There are vendors who will pay you a percentage of their profits to direct customers to their product. This saves them time and money, and multiplies their efforts many times, thus allowing them to reach a massive audience without a financial outlay. They do not pay you until you get a customer to buy from them. There are affiliate marketers who write articles, then submit those articles to article submission sites, blogs and websites. The articles contain a resource box or bio box that contains a link to the vendor's sales page. If a purchase is made, the article writer gets a percentage of the sale, anywhere from 4% from vendors like Amazon, up to a whopping 75% from vendors on sites like Clickbank.

2 - Upfront Payment
This is a great way for article writers to generate instant income. A writer can write articles on popular niches (topics) like "Losing Weight" or "Making Money Online", and then sell those to marketers who need content for websites, blogs and article submission accounts. Many article submission sites also pay upfront for quality content. Payment ranges anywhere from $2 to $30 per article, depending on a wide range of variables.

3 - Performance Payment
A relatively new way of making money from articles is the performance payment. An article is written, and then submitted to article submission sites who offer a specific amount of money per thousand page views. This may sound like pennies, but can actually add up to a nice monthly payment when one hundred or more high quality articles are out there, using keywords with a lot of searches.

As you can see, these three methods all have one thing in common. You have to write articles! When I started out, one article seemed like a lot. Then I did some article marketing research, and discovered that most articles on the internet were between 300 and 500 words. That is because the internet is not like paper article advertising. People want quick, relevant information on the net. This means it is entirely possible to have 100 articles out there earning you money in only a month or two. (I still type with two fingers, and crank out between 5 and 20 articles every day.)

There are literally dozens of article submission sites out there that operate differently. Some offer one form of payment or another, and they are all different. I have found a site that allows you to earn money all three ways at once. Associated Content, the site you are reading this article on, allows you to submit articles for upfront payment and performance payments, while containing a link to a relevant site. In this way, you hit the trifecta! Let me lay out the steps you need to take today to make money within 10 days.

A - Open an account with AssociatedContent.com. This takes all of 5 minutes. It is easy and quick, and you are under no obligation of any kind.
B - Read their Terms of Service. Basically, you want to submit ORIGINAL content that has not been submitted anywhere else, but you need to read the T.O.S. and be familiar with it.
C - Go to clickbank.com and register. They are the largest supplier of digital products in the world, and this is where vendors go to list their e-books for affiliates like you to sell.
D - In article marketing research is everything. Do some keyword research and find terms that are getting searched for 100 or more times a day. There are a lot of other excellent keyword search tools out there, but Google's keyword tool is Free, easy to use, and has all sorts of parameters. Go to Google and type in Keyword Tool to access it. When you type in a keyword, Google will return a listing of related words, and display how many times a month they are searched.
E - Take that keyword back to clickbank and search "the Marketplace". When you find a vendor selling that type of product, click "promote this product", and you will be given the html code you need to add a link to your article. (Many of these vendors have done a lot of article marketing research, and will provide you help to sell their products!)
F - Write a 350 - 500 word article on the keyword phrase you researched, making sure to credit any sources you may have used, and adding your affiliate link at the end.
G - Submit the article to AssociatedContent.com. There are several different submission guidelines, so choose the correct one that allows for upfront payments, and performance payments, and calls for original content.
H - Write a second article, then a third, etc.

That's it! Associated Content generally takes a week to 10 days to review an article. If they turn you down for upfront payment, don't fret. You can still submit for performance payments, and your affiliate link will always be there. And they will tll you exactly what you need to do in the future to be accepted.

This is a bare-bones method, but can be refined, and made to fit your personal style. There is a great community of accomplished writers on Associated Content who are very giving, and will answer any questions you may have.

If you improve your knowledge of keyword research, keyword density, article marketing research, article title creation, and affiliate marketing, you will find yourself receiving more money upfront, AND getting more page views.

If you would like the same article marketing program I use every day to make money online (a $97 value available FREE to only the next 35 people) , go to WWW.FREEARTICLEMARKETING.INFO for an instant FREE download.
